Surefire Soul Ensemble at The Hideout

Greetings.

Every Tuesday night, for the past six weeks and growing, Sure Fire Soul Ensemble performs at The Hideout in La Mesa.  January 20th, was no exception and the band kicked off it’s signature soul jazz sound at 9:45pm. They even had a raffle for vintage vinyl, and there was certain electric Moog Bach [Switched On Bach] recording that was highly sought after.  Patrons only had to buy a reasonablly priced beer to enter the raffle, and 7.7% Ballast seems to go well with some funk music.

Tim Felton is the leader and organist of the group. Here, in Tim’s own words’ is how he describes the group.

The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble is a heavy, original, instrumental soul band based in San Diego. They draw influence from the masters of the style from the past and modern day, including: Quincy Jones, Jimmy McGriff, The Meters, Isaac Hayes, and The Poets of Rhythm. ®T. Felton 2014.

The other members of the group are,  Jesse Audelo – Sax and Flute, Peter “D” Williams – Drums, Matthew LaBarber – Bass, Kiko Cornejo Jr. – Percussion,  Nicholas Costa – Guitar,  Bill Caballero – Trumpet, Sheryll Felten – Shekere.

The true testament to the caliber of a band is which other local musicians come to check out group.   The Hideout on Tuesday night was the double threat tenor saxophonists, Robert Dove and Ian Tordella.  Everyone was just checking the sick grooves, tight harmonies and great solos by the band.

Speaking of some great solos, check this out.

Nick Costa got da’ chops.

Bill Caballero channeling his inner Blue Mitchell on trumpet.

Jesse Audelo, jazz flute.

Jesse Audelo, tenor madness.

The actual bar, The Hideout, is great find if you are looking for a place to go.  Even if you hate good music, a laid back vibe, and healthy healthy beer, at least the bathrooms are clean.  There is even a bus stop right outside, so getting to it is easy.  Getting home might be a little harder.  Just make a friend there and have him/her take you home.  Or go back to their place… I don’t care, either one works.  There was more than one or two date couples at The Hideout on Tuesday night. For sure.
