Hello San Diego.
Every Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm, San Diego’s best rising stars congregate in Little Italy. Led by drummer and composer Matt Smith, a spirited jazz jam session at 98 Bottles takes place. There is an awesome food menu and of course, 98 bottles to choose from. Great local musicians gather to share their love of music and play some of the timeless standards too. Matt also uses the venue to promote his newer compositions. Check out one of them in the video below.
The jam session is open to horn players, singers, guitarists (you might need to bring your amp), bassists, and drummers. Please be considerate of your fellow musicians and patrons, and follow good jam session etiquette. What does that mean? 1. You can ‘call’ a standard jazz tune and play it from memory. 2. Your instrument is in tune. 3. You know the usual flow of musical conversation within the jazz idiom. Follow these simple guidelines and it will make a much more memorable time for everyone involved.

This is one of Matt’s newest tunes. “Pack your bags”. It features local staples in the music scene, Mack Leighton and Ed Kornhauser. Listen carefully and you can even hear the roar of the local air traffic stream over as Ed starts in on the opening chordal sequence.
The “Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio” is a up and coming group fronted by local San Diego drummer, trombonist and composer Matthew Smith. This dynamic trio will show you, the listener what it’s like inside a drummer’s head. Filled with Smith’s rhythmic compositions, the trio will push your polyrhytrymic mind to the limit from beat one. As one of the newest trios to San Diego’s illustrious jazz scene this group is not one to pass up. ®Matt Smith 2014
