The International Hustlers at Atomic.
The Gaslamp District was buzzing on early on the warm Saturday night. This hotspot in downtown San Diego, Ca is visited by tourists and locals alike. Sidewalks are filled with singles, dous, intoxicated bachloerette parties, sailors on leave from the base, bouncers, and cab drivers. Of course, the usual pan handler is on the corner too. This is San Diego after all.
On March 7th, 2015 The International Hustlers performed a smoking hot set at The Atomic music venue. (Note: The Atomic was formally known as The Stage.) Celebrating their one year anniversary, the five piece band took the stage around 7:45p and ripped through an hour and twenty minutes of music without a break. In the band were some of San Diego’s finest instrumentalists; Bryce Guiliani on drums, Chris Duvall on bass, Anthony Stevens on keys, Paul Viani on tenor sax, and Chris Lougeay on guitar.
The band opened up with “You’re The One“. Originally written Sly Stone and redimagined by organist Big John Patton. After a few choruses of soulful solos, the band segued directly into the original “The Heater”. It was very angular and an upbeat funky blues. It was clear that the band had something to prove, and that the foot was going to on the gas pedal all night long.

Through out the rest of the night the band played a well crafted setlist of obscure soul jazz funk. The selections included Hank Mobley’s “The Turnaround”, Grant Green’s treatment of “Let the Music Take Your Mind”, and originals by Chris Lougeay. Even the crowd that was in attendance couldn’t stay seated or parked at the bar. After a few tunes, everyone crashed to the dance floor. Young and not so young alike began to get down to the funky sounds of The International Hustlers. The powerful drum beats of Bryce Guiliani and thumping bass Chris Duvall created an irresistible groove.
The Atomic was a great venue to play. The music poured out onto 5th Ave and lured people into the club. The Unique sounds of The International Hustlers at Atomic really stood out on the street. Where canned music and prerecorded tracks were the norm, The Hustlers retro funk throwback sound spoke directly to those who heard it. The crowd was left wanting a whole lot more.
The International Hustlers will be doing a live radio broad cast soon. Always check back for more dates and recordings. These pages are updated frequently.
**Update: The Radio Broadcast will be on April 19, 2015. Live on WSRadio.com @ 4pm.
